Aduro and AstroTurf target chemical recycling path for end-of-life turf
Aduro Clean Technologies and AstroTurf Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to evaluate whether Aduro's patented Hydrochemolytic Technology (HCT) can convert the polyethylene and polypropylene components of worn-out synthetic turf into liquid hydrocarbon feedstock suitable for re-entry into existing petrochemical infrastructure. The agreement is an evaluation framework, not a commercial deployment commitment, but it marks the first publicly disclosed collaboration between a chemical-recycling developer and the originator of the synthetic turf category itself.
Synthetic turf is a material-science challenge in miniature. A single field surface typically combines PE grass blades, PP backing layers, cured polyurethane adhesive, rubber infill, and sand, all compacted over years of field use. That complexity makes conventional mechanical recycling economically marginal: sorting the polyolefin-rich fraction from the non-target materials is costly, and contamination reduces yield quality. Aduro's HCT, which uses water as a chemical agent at relatively low temperatures, the company says selectively breaks PE and PP into shorter-chain hydrocarbons usable as steam-cracker feedstock, while leaving non-target compounds largely intact. Prior laboratory testing on post-use turf materials, conducted through a separate confidential engagement with an unnamed global turf producer, reportedly confirmed the conversion pathway, though it also flagged upstream preparation as the critical bottleneck.
The regulatory tailwind
The timing is not incidental. Policy frameworks on both sides of the Atlantic are tightening producer-responsibility obligations for complex plastic composites. The release points to New York State's carpet extended-producer-responsibility legislation as an early indicator of how end-of-life mandates could reshape demand for recycling solutions across synthetic surface categories. European circularity targets under the revised Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and the forthcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation are creating analogous pressure on sports-surface manufacturers operating in EU markets. As more fields installed during the synthetic turf boom of the 2000s reach their typical eight-to-twelve-year replacement window, the volume of end-of-life material entering the waste stream is accelerating regardless of policy, giving the economics of chemical recycling a structural volume argument that earlier pilots lacked.
"Our prior testing showed that the polyethylene and polypropylene components of post-use turf can be converted using HCT, but the broader opportunity depends on understanding how those materials are recovered, prepared, and delivered into the process," said Ofer Vicus, Chief Executive Officer of Aduro.
Convergence and capital read-across
For cross-sector strategists, the more telling signal is where this sits in the broader advanced-recycling investment landscape. Chemical recycling has attracted significant capital in recent years, with players such as Plastic Energy, PureCycle Technologies, and Brightmark building out pyrolysis and solvent-based routes for mixed plastics. Aduro's water-based approach is positioned as a lower-temperature, lower-cost alternative, though it remains at pilot scale. The synthetic turf vertical represents a narrow but contractually captive feedstock stream: field owners facing landfill bans or producer-responsibility levies have an active incentive to route end-of-life material into a certified circular pathway rather than pay disposal fees. That captive dynamic is structurally attractive for any recycling technology developer seeking to de-risk feedstock aggregation, which is historically the biggest commercial failure point in the sector.
The broader capital implication is that sustainability-linked mandates are effectively subsidising the business-case development work that venture and growth-equity investors would otherwise have to fund directly. If producer-responsibility frameworks spread from carpets and turf to other complex composite plastics, the addressable market for HCT-style chemistry expands considerably, pulling in infrastructure capital alongside cleantech-focused venture funds. Aduro is listed on Nasdaq, the TSX, and the Frankfurt exchange, giving it relatively broad access to public markets, though its current market capitalisation remains small-cap. The AstroTurf partnership, while pre-commercial, adds a recognised brand name to its reference list at a moment when offtake credibility is the primary gating factor for the next stage of financing across the chemical-recycling sector.
