EIT AI & Robotics Community opens founder call across Europe
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology has rebranded its AI-focused initiative as the EIT AI & Robotics Community and launched its first open call for founders, marking a structural shift in how Europe intends to close the gap between world-class research and deployable commercial systems.
The pivot to a combined AI-and-robotics mandate is deliberate. Europe has consistently produced high-quality robotics research but has struggled to convert that output into scaled, market-ready products, particularly in the domain of intelligent, AI-driven machines operating in physical industrial environments. By merging the two disciplines under one funding and venture-building umbrella, the EIT is making an institutional bet that the convergence happening in laboratories needs to be mirrored in the commercialisation infrastructure.
From lab bench to founder's seat
The first open call, the AI Entrepreneurs Lab, is a five-day, fully in-person bootcamp running 9 to 13 November 2026 across Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. It targets Master's and PhD students, recent graduates, and early-stage founders whose ventures place AI or robotics at the core of the business model. The cohort is capped at 15 participants, who can apply individually or as a team. Shortlisted candidates work with experienced operators on customer discovery, commercial-model testing and pitch development, with direct access to investor introductions. Up to five prizes of €10,000 are awarded at Demo Day. Applications close 21 October 2026 at 17:00 CET.
A second call, FactoryX, opens in Autumn 2026 and is structured differently: it draws research-industry consortia into co-funded projects to validate advanced solutions in live operational settings rather than starting from the founding-team level.
"Adding robotics responds to a specific gap," said Orestis Trasanidis, Head of the AI & Robotics Community. "Europe produces world-class robotics research but struggles to turn it into deployed, commercial systems, particularly intelligent, AI-driven robotics operating in real industrial and physical-world environments."
A pipeline designed for regulatory advantage
The broader programme connects four stages: the AI Entrepreneurs Lab activates early founders; the Growth Studio provides €100,000 to €200,000 tickets for pre-Series A AI and robotics companies; FactoryX validates at industrial scale; and the Founders Club opens routes to global capital and corporate partnerships. Together, the initiative aims to launch 14 innovations, support more than ten high-potential scale-ups, and help participating ventures leverage more than €80 million in investment by 2028, across healthcare, manufacturing, food systems, biotechnology and robotics.
Notably, the EIT is positioning Europe's regulatory posture as a competitive asset rather than a burden. Founders are guided to build compliance with the EU AI Act and the EU Machinery Regulation into their products from the outset, a design-for-compliance philosophy the community frames as a differentiator in global markets increasingly scrutinising AI governance.
This is the cross-sector lens worth watching. The initiative spans EIT Food, EIT Health and EIT Culture and Creativity alongside 28Digital as the lead partner. That coalition signals that the most consequential applications targeted here sit at the intersection of robotics, biological systems and physical infrastructure: agricultural automation, surgical and care robotics, and advanced manufacturing, precisely the domains where AI-hardware convergence is accelerating fastest and where European industrial policy has the most to protect.
For cross-sector investors and sovereign capital allocators, the structural question is whether an EU-funded pipeline can outrun the speed advantages of US and Chinese private venture ecosystems in these same domains. The €80 million leverage target is modest relative to the capital flowing into robotics and industrial AI from Silicon Valley and Shenzhen, but the regulatory-compliance angle offers a genuine moat in regulated markets, healthcare procurement, food safety and defence-adjacent manufacturing, where trustworthy-by-design credentials increasingly determine market access.
