InsuranceDekho and RenewBuy merge to build India's largest insurtech
InsuranceDekho and RenewBuy have announced the consolidation of their businesses into a single, unified insurance distribution platform, one the combined entity claims is now India's largest AI-enabled insurer marketplace by POSP-driven premium generated for fiscal year 2026. The deal pairs two complementary geographic footprints, with InsuranceDekho's strength in northern and western India meeting RenewBuy's presence across the south, creating a network that reaches 98.57% of Indian pin codes.
The numbers underline the scale of the consolidation. The combined premium book exceeds ₹66,000 million (approximately $790 million at current rates), the platform hosts more than six lakh (600,000) digital partners, and the two firms together report having issued over two crore (20 million) policies since inception as of 31 March 2026. The merged business will operate under the InsuranceDekho brand, led by its founder and CEO Ankit Agrawal, with leadership from both legacy organisations remaining in place.
An AI-first distribution flywheel
The strategic logic centres on an "AI-first, distribution-plus-technology flywheel." InsuranceDekho has built in-house tools that deliver real-time plan recommendations to its partner network; RenewBuy contributes technology infrastructure oriented around automated partner onboarding and digital-first experiences. The combined platform will operate as an open, multi-insurer marketplace spanning motor, health, life and commercial insurance, drawing on products from 52 insurers across more than 750 listed options.
Agrawal framed the rationale in direct terms: "This coming together is a strategic step towards taking insurance to the last mile. Our model has always been powered by our partners, and by backing them with a range of product choice, stronger tools and the support to grow their business, we deepen insurance access in the towns and villages of Bharat that need it most."
The regulatory dimension is also front of mind. The merged entity has indicated it will work closely with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) as integration proceeds, a signal that the deal's ultimate operating structure will depend in part on how India's insurance regulator receives consolidation at this scale.
Convergence read-across: fintech infrastructure meets rural digital access
For cross-sector strategists, the InsuranceDekho-RenewBuy consolidation sits at the intersection of two powerful macro currents. The first is the ongoing build-out of India's phygital financial services infrastructure, a model that blends digital tooling with on-the-ground partner networks to reach populations that remain underserved by pure-digital or branch-based incumbents. This mirrors patterns already visible in payments (PhonePe, Paytm's merchant network) and lending (microfinance-meets-neobank hybrids), but insurance penetration across India's tier-2 and tier-3 markets remains structurally low, creating a large addressable runway.
The second current is the maturing of AI as a distribution enabler in emerging-market financial services. Rather than replacing human agents, the model here augments them: AI-powered advisory and automated onboarding allow a semi-skilled partner in a small town to operate with the product range and analytical support previously available only to metro-based brokers. That architectural choice has implications beyond India. Across Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, insurtech players and incumbent carriers are watching whether the phygital-AI combination can structurally shift penetration rates in markets where income volatility makes underwriting complex and physical distribution has historically been too expensive.
For capital allocators, the consolidation also signals a maturation of the Indian insurtech funding cycle. After a period of parallel capital deployment across competing platforms, the market is now rationalising, the combined entity's scale gives it negotiating leverage with insurers and a path to profitability that sub-scale rivals struggle to articulate. Investors with exposure across India's fintech stack will note that distribution consolidation at this level typically precedes either an IPO runway or a strategic approach from a major carrier seeking embedded distribution at national scale.
