Storm Group names CEO to unlock grid-ready AI data centre sites
Storm Group, the Zurich-based powered-site developer, has appointed Reza Nedjatian as Chief Executive Officer, pairing the leadership move with a fresh round of strategic investment to accelerate grid-connected land acquisition across Germany, Iceland, Spain, the United States, and a number of European and Central Asian markets still under evaluation. The company positions itself as the layer that sits between land and compute: sourcing sites, securing planning consents, and delivering energised plots ready for data centre tenants to build on.
Nedjatian brings more than 15 years of large-scale power and digital infrastructure delivery, predominantly across the MENA region and North America. He has overseen the commissioning of more than 515MW of power projects globally, with a 240MW facility in Abu Dhabi among his most cited credentials. His background is explicitly operational rather than financial: he has physically energised large-scale digital infrastructure sites, which Storm's founder and chairman Bijan Alizadeh says is precisely the competence the market now demands.
The constraint is land and grid, not chips
The framing that both Alizadeh and Nedjatian return to is pointed. "The binding constraint is not compute hardware, it is access to power and permitted sites," Alizadeh said in the announcement. That claim sits squarely within a widening consensus among hyperscalers, colocation operators and sovereign investors: the GPU supply squeeze that defined 2023 and 2024 has materially eased, while the queue for grid connections and planning approvals in Western markets has lengthened. In the UK, parts of Germany, and key US transmission corridors, connection wait times for large industrial loads now run to several years, a structural bottleneck that the IEA and several national grid operators have publicly flagged.
Storm's affiliated asset management arm, Cypher Capital, structures the investment products that give institutional investors exposure to this pipeline, operating as a fund and managed account platform sitting alongside the development business. The new round of strategic investment will flow into site acquisition and grid connection work, though the company has not disclosed quantum or investor names.
Cross-sector capital and the infrastructure arms race
The significance of Storm's model for the broader convergence economy extends well beyond a single CEO appointment. Data centre infrastructure has become a multi-sector battleground in which energy utilities, sovereign wealth funds, construction groups, and AI hyperscalers are all competing for the same scarce resource: consented, grid-connected acreage close to fibre backbone routes. Storm's geography is instructive: Iceland's surplus geothermal capacity makes it attractive for low-carbon compute, Germany sits at the centre of European cloud demand, and the US market remains the world's largest single destination for AI capital expenditure.
The powered-site developer category that Storm occupies is itself emerging as a distinct asset class, sitting between traditional real estate development and energy infrastructure. Institutional capital has begun to recognise it as such, with pension funds and sovereign vehicles in the Gulf, Scandinavia, and Southeast Asia actively building positions in pre-consented data centre land. The Cypher Capital structure suggests Storm is deliberately targeting that institutional appetite rather than purely chasing hyperscaler offtake agreements.
For adjacent sectors, the read-across is material. Energy grids in Storm's target markets face compounding demand from AI compute, EV charging roll-out, and industrial electrification simultaneously. Grid operators in Germany and Spain are already managing queue backlogs that run into the mid-2030s for large-scale connections. Any platform that can de-risk and accelerate that consenting process holds structural pricing power in a market where latency, in the planning sense, not the networking sense, is the defining competitive variable. Nedjatian's Abu Dhabi experience, where large-scale power projects require navigating sovereign procurement and grid integration at speed, is directly transferable to European markets that are rapidly developing similarly complex multi-stakeholder approval regimes.
