Zano Hard Fork 6 bridges privacy chain to Ethereum and Solana
Zano, the privacy-first Layer 1 blockchain launched in 2019, has activated Hard Fork 6 on mainnet, completing what the project describes as its most significant network upgrade to date. The release introduces a new address type designed to ease integration with centralised exchanges and decentralised finance infrastructure, and for the first time allows native ZANO tokens to move non-custodially to transparent public chains including Ethereum and Solana.
The dual-direction bridging marks a strategic pivot. Previously, assets such as BTC, ETH and SOL could be brought into Zano to benefit from its privacy protections, but ZANO itself could not move outward without custodial risk. Hard Fork 6 closes that gap, letting ZANO enter external liquidity pools and exchange order books while retaining the option to return to Zano's private environment. Assets are visible while on public chains and regain privacy protections upon bridging back.
Gateway Addresses: retrofitting privacy for institutional rails
The central technical feature of the upgrade is Gateway Addresses, a new account-based address type sitting alongside Zano's existing UTXO model rather than replacing it. The UTXO architecture underpins Zano's privacy guarantees, but it has historically required custom engineering from any exchange or bridge that wanted to integrate. Gateway Addresses give external services a single trackable balance and instant synchronisation, lowering the integration burden considerably.
Andrey Sabelnikov, Co-founder and Lead Developer at Zano, explained the design intent: "The UTXO model is fundamental to Zano's privacy, so replacing it was never the goal. Gateway Addresses add the account-style state that large services need while preserving the privacy guarantees of standard Zano addresses."
The team says it is already in contact with cross-chain liquidity protocols including THORChain about post-upgrade integrations. Quinten van Welzen, Head of Growth, said the fork "could make a real difference for Zano's adoption, as it opens an easier path for ZANO into DeFi liquidity pools and broader exchange listings."
Additional protocol changes shipped alongside the address upgrade: stronger consensus validation rules, hardened wallet-file encryption, per-output payment IDs for cleaner exchange reconciliation, anti-DoS node limits, and SOCKS5 proxy support for operators routing traffic through Tor.
Convergence read-across: privacy infrastructure meets DeFi capital flows
The strategic subtext of Hard Fork 6 sits at the intersection of privacy technology, regulatory pressure and DeFi liquidity architecture. As regulators across the EU and US have tightened scrutiny of privacy coins and mixing services, several exchanges have delisted assets that cannot produce audit trails. Zano's Gateway Address approach attempts a middle path: preserving cryptographic privacy for end users while giving institutional counterparties the account-model visibility they require for compliance and operational integration.
That tension is increasingly relevant beyond the blockchain sector. The same privacy-versus-auditability trade-off shapes enterprise data infrastructure, financial messaging networks and, in a different register, sovereign digital-identity schemes. Architects working across these domains are watching whether protocol-level privacy layers can genuinely co-exist with the transparency expectations of regulated markets, or whether the two remain fundamentally incompatible.
Looking ahead, Zano's roadmap introduces two further architectural layers. The Zano Execution Layer is an EVM-compatible sidechain intended to host standard Solidity smart contracts with bridged ZANO as the native gas token, targeting compatibility with tooling including Hardhat, Foundry and MetaMask from day one. Separately, the project has announced Zenith, a pure proof-of-stake consensus protocol built on its existing Zarcanum privacy foundations, with 15-second block times and a target launch in Q2 2027. Together, the two additions would position Zano as a privacy base layer with programmable execution on top, a design pattern that places it in direct competition with zero-knowledge rollup ecosystems for the attention of privacy-conscious DeFi developers and institutional participants seeking confidential settlement rails.
