Consolidated Water wins record $10.1m order and Hawaii go-ahead
Consolidated Water Co. Ltd., the Cayman Islands-headquartered water treatment specialist, has secured two significant contract milestones in the United States: a limited notice to proceed on a seawater desalination project in Kalaeloa, Hawaii, and a record $10.1 million municipal water treatment equipment order from a municipality on Florida's east coast.
The Hawaii development sees the Honolulu Board of Water Supply authorise the release of approximately $6 million in early-procurement funding for long-lead equipment at the planned Kalaeloa reverse osmosis desalination facility. Construction timing remains unconfirmed due to permitting delays outside either party's control, but the early procurement authorisation is designed to compress the eventual build schedule once those hurdles clear. Under its contract, Consolidated Water will design, build, operate and maintain a facility capable of producing 1.7 million gallons of potable water per day, with a 20-year operating term and two optional five-year extensions.
Record Florida Order
The Florida award, described by the company as its largest-ever municipal membrane equipment order, covers the design, fabrication and delivery of nanofiltration membrane water treatment systems and horizontal cartridge filters. Delivery is scheduled for November 2027. CEO Rick McTaggart said the orders "reinforce our ability to provide advanced water treatment solutions across multiple phases of the water infrastructure value chain, from specialised equipment manufacturing to the design, construction and long-term operation of major treatment facilities."
The Florida order is notable not just for its scale but for its technology profile. Nanofiltration sits between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis in the membrane treatment hierarchy, and is increasingly favoured by municipalities managing ageing freshwater infrastructure that faces rising contaminant loads, from agricultural runoff to legacy pipe leaching. Horizontal cartridge filters, meanwhile, are a pre-treatment workhorse across industrial and municipal systems. Securing record volumes of both in a single order reflects the pace at which US municipal buyers are upgrading water infrastructure.
