Bridger Aerospace wins DOI order for sensor-laden wildfire aircraft

A 112-day federal task order deploys Bridger's most capable multi-mission King Air, integrating novel wide-area motion imagery into wildfire response.

Bridger Aerospace, the NASDAQ-listed aerial firefighting operator based in Belgrade, Montana, has secured a task order from the US Department of the Interior (DOI) to deploy a heavily modified King Air 350 aircraft across the United States for 112 days through to the end of October. The contract covers wildfire and emergency response operations during the peak of the western fire season, a period when drought conditions and rising temperatures are expected to stretch federal response capacity.

The aircraft represents the company's most technically ambitious platform to date. Modified at Bridger's FAA-certified repair station with engineering support from its Huntsville team, the King Air has been fitted with Blackhawk engine upgrades for improved speed and loiter time, Garmin avionics, dual sensor systems, and real-time data dissemination capabilities. The centrepiece of the sensor suite is what Bridger describes as the first deployment of Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) technology in a wildfire context, paired with a proven MX-15 electro-optical/infrared sensor. WAMI, a persistent-surveillance technology previously associated with military and intelligence applications, provides wide-field video capture that can track multiple ground events simultaneously.

From battlefield to fireline

The transfer of WAMI from defence and intelligence contexts to civilian emergency management is the most notable technological dimension of this deployment. The sensor class gained public profile through its use in persistent-surveillance programmes operated by US defence contractors, and its migration into wildfire response illustrates a broader pattern of dual-use aerial intelligence technology finding commercial government markets. For aerospace and defence investors, the story is one of technology lifecycle: capabilities that took years to mature in military procurement are now accessible to civilian agencies at a cost point that makes a 112-day DOI task order viable.

Sovereign and institutional investors tracking climate adaptation as an asset class are beginning to treat aerial intelligence operators differently from traditional government-services contractors, given the technology differentiation premium and recurring federal contract structures. Bridger's NASDAQ listing (ticker: BAER) gives public-market investors direct exposure to this niche, though the company's market capitalisation remains small and the contract base concentrated in US federal agencies.

For the wider aerospace and defence sector, the Bridger deployment illustrates how the line between military-grade ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) platforms and civilian emergency-response aircraft is narrowing.
