Fuel Tech wins $2.6m APC contracts for industrial NOx control
Fuel Tech (NASDAQ: FTEK), the Warrenville, Illinois-based emissions control specialist, has announced two air pollution control (APC) contracts totalling approximately $2.6 million with domestic industrial customers, bringing the company's year-to-date announced bookings to $12.6 million.
The larger of the two awards covers the supply of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for a new industrial customer operating two natural gas fired turbines. The systems will use Fuel Tech's UDI Urea Direct Injection reagent delivery technology, which the company says eliminates the safety and logistics hazards associated with handling anhydrous or aqueous ammonia at site. The scope covers reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. Engineering work has already begun, with equipment delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.
The second award is a change order from a repeat customer, accelerating the scope of an ongoing SCR project. Delivery is targeted for the third quarter of 2026.
Bookings momentum and the regulatory backdrop
Speaking on the announcements, President and CEO Vincent J. Arnone said: "We are continuing to actively pursue additional APC contracts that are likely to be awarded by the end of the third quarter of 2026." That forward guidance, while cautious, signals that order flow is not confined to the two disclosed contracts.
The broader context is regulatory rather than technological. Industrial emissions compliance in the United States remains a durable source of demand for NOx abatement suppliers. The EPA's ongoing implementation of National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone, which NOx directly feeds, continues to drive retrofit and new-build requirements across utility and industrial combustion units. For Fuel Tech, whose installed base spans more than 2,100 units worldwide, recurring upgrade cycles and change orders form a meaningful share of revenues alongside new-system wins.
Cross-sector read-across: industrial decarbonisation and the infrastructure build-out
The industrial emissions control market sits at an increasingly visible intersection of energy infrastructure and sustainability-driven capital spending. As gas-fired power generation expands to backstop intermittent renewables capacity in the United States and elsewhere, new turbine installations, precisely the application described in the larger of these two contracts, require SCR systems as a condition of permitting. That coupling means APC demand is structurally linked to the pace of gas infrastructure investment, not merely to legacy retrofit cycles.
At the same time, industrial operators face tightening scrutiny from ESG-focused investors and lenders who increasingly require demonstrated emissions compliance as part of financing conditions. This places emissions control vendors in a quiet but consequential position: they are part of the enabling infrastructure that allows carbon-intensive industrial assets to remain bankable.
