Tavant and Dark Matter link AI mortgage automation to Empower LOS
Tavant, the Silicon Valley AI transformation specialist, has integrated its TOUCHLESS AI Mortgage Automation platform with the Empower loan origination solution (LOS) operated by Dark Matter Technologies. The tie-up gives Empower's lender clients access to AI-driven underwriting, document classification, data extraction and automated pre-close quality checks, without migrating away from the Dark Matter ecosystem they already operate within.
The integration targets the persistently manual interior of the mortgage production process: loan setup, conditions management, and the multi-step handoffs between processing and underwriting that add days to cycle times and increase the cost per loan. Tavant says the platform uses a combination of classical, generative and agentic AI techniques to automate these stages, reducing workflow fragmentation and enabling lenders to scale loan volumes without proportional headcount growth.
An open-platform bet in a consolidating mortgage-tech market
Dark Matter's chief executive Vikas Rao framed the move as a deliberate ecosystem strategy. "We designed Empower as an open platform so partners can connect their best ideas directly to our lenders," Rao said. "Tavant's TOUCHLESS integration is a strong example of the innovation an open platform makes possible, giving lenders more ways to automate and close faster."
The open-platform positioning is notable in a US mortgage-technology sector that has spent the past three years consolidating rapidly. Legacy LOS vendors have faced pressure from challenger fintechs promising cloud-native, API-first origination stacks, while the sharp rise in rates between 2022 and 2025 compressed lender margins and accelerated the push to cut cost per loan. In that environment, integrations that add AI capability without requiring a full system replacement offer lenders a lower-risk adoption path, and for platform vendors such as Dark Matter, they extend switching costs and ecosystem stickiness.
Cross-sector read-across: agentic workflows arrive in regulated lending
The strategic significance for a cross-sector audience extends beyond mortgage. The Tavant-Dark Matter integration is one of a growing number of deployments in which agentic AI workflows, until recently associated mainly with software development and customer-service automation, are being applied to highly regulated, document-intensive financial processes. Mortgage underwriting is among the more demanding test environments: it involves identity verification, income assessment, property valuation, regulatory compliance checks and investor guideline matching, all within tight statutory timelines.
If agentic decisioning proves durable at scale in this context, the read-across for other regulated verticals, insurance underwriting, trade-finance processing, clinical-trial data abstraction, is significant. Capital has been flowing into AI-automation plays across all three areas, but mortgage is unusual in that the workflow is both heavily standardised (which suits AI) and heavily scrutinised by federal regulators (which creates accountability risk that slows adoption).
