Regulated exchanges wire into on-chain perps as safeguards lag
Regulated exchanges are connecting directly to on-chain perpetuals infrastructure at a pace that is outrunning the risk frameworks underneath them. South African exchange VALR wired into Hyperliquid this month to offer more than 200 cross-asset perpetual contracts, while two US venues launched pre-IPO perpetuals in June covering private companies including SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic. New data from Artemis puts numbers to the market they are joining: real-world asset (RWA) perpetuals have grown from near-zero to a 37% peak share of total on-chain daily perpetual volume since March 2026, a doubling in four months.
The speed of that expansion reflects two genuine use cases that on-chain venues have validated. First, weekend price exposure: on-chain markets allow traders to express directional views on equities and commodities outside traditional exchange hours, effectively front-running Monday opens. Second, pre-IPO price discovery: synthetic perpetual books on private companies have shown reasonable predictive accuracy for eventual IPO pricing, and currently represent the only liquid, accessible vehicle for retail and institutional traders seeking exposure to late-stage private firms.
A fragile infrastructure beneath the growth
The market is not without structural risk. In May, Ventuals' SpaceX perpetual contract crashed 45% in thirty minutes, liquidating more than 400 users and wiping $1.51m in positions. The trigger was an off-chain data provider that failed to correctly process SpaceX's five-for-one stock split, exposing the degree to which pricing integrity depends on oracle infrastructure that has not yet been stress-tested at scale. Weekend pricing is a particular vulnerability: volatility risk is absorbed into dynamic funding rates and market-maker spreads, meaning traders face higher costs precisely when liquidity is thinnest.
The research framing the market identifies four factors that will determine which venues survive consolidation: liquidity depth, speed of new market listings, pricing infrastructure quality, and regulatory positioning. On-chain venues currently hold structural advantages on the first three. Hyperliquid's HIP-3 model gates permissionless market deployment behind a 500,000 HYPE token stake, with deployers earning 50% of fees in return, a mechanism that incentivises speed and quality simultaneously. Centralised exchanges, by contrast, face slower and more opaque listing processes with no equivalent external incentive.
The convergence play: compute, capital and regulated rails
The macro significance extends beyond crypto markets. Traditional exchange operators are already responding: CME has moved to 24/7 trading, while Nasdaq and NYSE have extended session hours, pointing towards all-in-one platforms where equities, commodities, FX and crypto converge under a single roof. The oracle infrastructure underpinning on-chain pricing is expanding in parallel. Chainlink has extended data streams to tokenised US stocks; Pyth has built purpose-built 24/7 indices for equities, metals and oil. Most strategically, Ornn's Compute Price Index, developed in partnership with the Intercontinental Exchange, prices AI hardware including Nvidia H100 chips, with a potential NYSE-listed compute futures market pending regulatory approval.
That last detail matters beyond fintech. A liquid, regulated futures market for GPU compute would give capital allocators a direct hedging instrument for AI infrastructure exposure, connecting the financial plumbing of on-chain markets to the physical infrastructure race underpinning foundation-model development. Sovereign wealth funds and cross-sector investors already navigating data-centre and AI-chip allocation would gain a new pricing signal and a new risk management tool simultaneously.
Regulatory positioning is the remaining variable. The CFTC issued a policy framework for perpetual contract listings in May, covering 24/7 trading, clearing and settlement, and approved Kalshi's BTCPERP as the first US-listed perpetual future. The framework opens an onshoring path, but it also raises the compliance bar for on-chain protocols that have operated in a permissionless grey zone. The research notes that the entire RWA perpetuals market remains 30 to 60 times smaller than crypto perpetuals and CME equity futures, suggesting significant upside if regulatory clarity accelerates institutional inflows, but equally significant concentration risk if a pricing failure or enforcement action arrives before the infrastructure matures.
