Exco launches nuclear energy arm as reshoring drives tooling demand
Exco Technologies, the Toronto-listed supplier of die-cast and extrusion tooling, has moved beyond its automotive heartland, launching Exco Energy to target Canada's nuclear sector while riding a reshoring wave that is pushing its casting and extrusion backlog above historical norms. The company reported Q3 fiscal 2026 sales of $165.4 million, up 7% year on year, with EBITDA jumping 26% to $18.5 million, a margin expansion from 9.5% to 11.2% that signals the operational leverage embedded in its recent capital programme is beginning to pay out.
The Exco Energy unit draws on the precision-machining, engineering and additive-manufacturing capabilities of the company's Large Mould Group. Exco hosted the Government of Canada's Nuclear Energy Strategy announcement on 22 June 2026, positioning itself early in what Ottawa is framing as a strategic industrial build-out. Management says it also intends to apply the unit's additive-manufacturing expertise across other technically demanding end markets, making nuclear a beachhead rather than a destination.
Reshoring fuels the tooling pipeline
The Q3 performance was driven by two complementary dynamics. In Automotive Solutions, segment sales rose 9% to $88.3 million, supported by resilient North American vehicle demand (US SAAR averaged 16.2 million units in the quarter), new programme launches and growth in accessory products. European conditions remained difficult, with OEM restructuring creating headwinds, though Exco's Morocco operations are beginning to capture supplier-consolidation opportunities as European carmakers retrench.
Casting and Extrusion posted a near-doubling of pretax profit, up 97% to $5.1 million, on a 4% revenue gain to $77.1 million. Extrusion tooling demand was diversified across construction, transportation, renewable energy and, notably, AI infrastructure-related projects, as data-centre build programmes require specialised aluminium extrusion profiles. The die-cast backlog remains above historical levels, though customer timing delays and the closure of the Large Mould Mexico facility created some drag on shipments in the quarter.
