Unzer names Isabelle Bénard Chief Product and AI Officer
Unzer, the Berlin-headquartered payment and software group, has appointed Isabelle Bénard as Chief Product and AI Officer, consolidating product strategy and artificial intelligence leadership into a single executive function. The move signals that Unzer is treating AI-driven product development as a core operational concern rather than a supporting function, a distinction its chief executive made explicit in announcing the hire.
Bénard joins from Mirakl, the marketplace technology platform where she served as Chief Product Officer. Her earlier career spans Amazon France, Global Fashion Group, SSENSE and Lightspeed, the latter of which she helped steer through international expansion and several acquisitions. Unzer says she brings more than fifteen years of international product leadership to a role the company describes as newly expanded, combining responsibilities that had previously been separate.
Embedding AI across the payments stack
The appointment lands as Unzer deepens AI deployment across its unified commerce platform, which today handles payments, software and financial services for more than 90,000 merchants across Europe. AI-supported capabilities are already live in merchant onboarding, fraud prevention, compliance, customer support and software development. Bénard's mandate is to accelerate that integration, making AI a structural component of how Unzer builds products and serves its merchant base rather than a layer added after the fact.
"At Unzer, AI is no longer an experiment or a side project. It is becoming part of how we build products, make decisions and support merchants every day," said Robert Bueninck, Unzer's CEO. He added that what distinguished Bénard was a product-led rather than technology-led instinct: she starts with the customer problem and works backwards, a discipline he argued would be critical to generating genuine merchant value rather than AI-for-its-own-sake feature bloat.
The wider fintech convergence context
Routine executive appointments rarely warrant attention at the macro level, but the structural choice to merge product and AI into a single C-suite title is worth reading across the European payments sector. Incumbent processors and software-led commerce platforms are converging on the same architecture: a unified data layer that can route payments, underwrite risk, and automate compliance decisions in real time. The executives leading that convergence increasingly need to hold both product and AI literacy simultaneously, which is why the combined CPAIO title is beginning to appear at scale-up payments firms alongside more traditional CPO and CTO designations.
For investors watching European fintech, Unzer sits in a segment under sustained consolidation pressure. Larger platform operators such as Adyen and Stripe have spent several years building proprietary AI tooling directly into their merchant stacks, compressing the differentiation window for mid-market players. Unzer's bet is that a tightly integrated product-and-AI function, rather than a bolt-on AI strategy, can sustain competitive relevance and support its cross-European expansion ambitions. Whether the new structure accelerates growth fast enough to stay ahead of platform commoditisation is the strategic question capital allocators in the European payments space will now be watching closely.
The appointment comes at a point when European regulatory overhead in payments, from PSD3 preparation to real-time fraud liability rules, is itself a product challenge as much as a compliance one. Embedding AI into onboarding and compliance workflows is increasingly a cost-of-doing-business decision rather than a differentiator, which means Bénard's more immediate task may be holding pace with regulatory demands while finding the product angles that genuinely extend Unzer's platform beyond the payments core.
