Novo Nordisk and AWS unite to compress drug discovery timelines
Novo Nordisk and Amazon Web Services have announced a strategic partnership that places cloud infrastructure and agentic AI at the centre of pharmaceutical drug discovery. The Danish pharma giant has formally designated AWS as its preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, with a co-innovation hub established inside Novo Nordisk's existing London facility where engineers and scientists from both organisations are working on compressing the timeline from drug target identification to first human dose.
The partnership is significant not merely for its scale but for what it signals about the direction of capital and talent in life sciences. Where AI-drug-discovery was until recently the preserve of pure-play startups, Isomorphic Labs, Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Insilico Medicine, the entry of a Big Pharma incumbent working directly with a hyperscaler marks a structural shift. Large incumbents are no longer licensing AI tools at arm's length; they are co-building.
Cloud infrastructure meets therapeutic science
The technical substance of the deal centres on several AWS services. Amazon Bio Discovery is being used to identify drug targets and connect genomic, imaging and clinical data. Amazon Bedrock provides the foundational model layer for designing therapies faster, while Amazon Bedrock AgentCore is being deployed to run AI agents across Novo Nordisk's broader operations. The company says it has already reduced clinical documentation time and has enabled more than 25,000 employees to lift productivity, though neither metric is accompanied by a third-party benchmark.
Novo Nordisk's CEO Mike Doustdar framed the deal in terms of acceleration and responsibility: "By combining our scientific expertise with AWS' tools and purpose-built services for the life sciences industry, while also creating a dedicated co-innovation hub within our existing facility in London, we are accelerating discovery and developing responsible AI solutions that will create real progress for people living with serious chronic diseases." The London location is worth noting: it sits in one of Europe's most active life sciences corridors, drawing on a talent pool that spans the Francis Crick Institute, Imperial College and a cluster of spinouts. The hub is, in effect, a bet that co-location of hyperscaler engineers with domain scientists accelerates output faster than API access alone.
The convergence play behind the partnership

Novo Nordisk also collaborates with Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon One Medical, meaning the partnership touches the full medicine value chain from discovery through to dispensing. That integration across the Amazon ecosystem gives Novo Nordisk a connected commercial stack but also deepens its dependency on a single technology group.
